Edge restraints are a critical element to the durability of flagstone flooring installation. They prevent the flagstone from moving and shifting over time. Unilock® offers several options for restraint. Unilock’s own plastic Edge Restraint is both economical and effective. Various concrete edging materials also work well with the added benefit of complementing the flagstone flooring with color and texture. |

"Catalogs" for design of flagstone flooring are simply tables that allow the designer to choose a pavement structure to suit a particular application. While these catalogs simplify the design process, they are not a substitute for good design. They may be used for light duty applications without further analysis, but heavy-duty applications should follow a more rigorous design method. However, these catalogs or tables allow the designer to quickly determine a design for estimating purposes, and a starting point for optimization. The service life of each pavement alternative including flagstone flooring must also be taken into consideration for equivalent life-cycle cost comparisons. The timing or schedule of each major maintenance and rehabilitation activity for each pavement alternative must be taken into account and the most appropriate service life selected for life-cycle cost analysis. |
After the installation is complete, including edge restraints, the flagstone flooring must be swept clean and then compacted with a plate compactor. This helps settle the flagstone into the bedding sand and creates a smooth flat surface. |
